Most of us, Christians, focuses on preserving physical purity until we reach to the point of marriage, it’s a cliche. We’re not just doing that to avoid disappointment on each other’s part after marriage but also considering that it’s a command.

But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation.       ~Colossians 1:22

Becoming holy in His sight doesn’t just involve physical aspect of our lives but the life itself with the help of the Holy Spirit as we let Him lead us in every ways.

The point here is that, most often, we tend to forget the importance of preserving emotional purity in our heart before marriage life.

Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life. ~Proverb 4:23

As we give away our emotions or affection in someone that is not worthy of it or not the one God prepared for you to have, we are wasting away pieces of our heart little by little until only the leftover has been left for our future mate. Above everything else, God commanded us to guard our heart. God can have said we must guard our body but no, He wants us to guard our heart. What is it in the heart that we must guard it? According to Heather Patenaude in her book Emotional Purity: an affair of the heart “Our own heart can deceive us. Our heart can lie, which may cause us to ignore what we are really feeling.” Our heart can sometimes make our emotions right in our own eyes but the truth is it’s not because our own way can never be right from what God’s heart way is. As what also Heather said “God gave us the ability to feel and love, but when we focus on how we feel, we may lose sight of why God gave us this human capacity”. Our heart might feel right but not all the time it’s what God desires us to have.
